Winona Ryder’s credentials as an 80s label icon were cemented by the double whammy of playing both Beetlejuice’s teen goth and Heathers’ sovereign bee gone wrong. It’s part of what makes this summer’s retro hit Visitor Things work so well: seeing her back in the 1980s, in a beaten-up meadow jacket surrounded by BMXs and landlines, just feels set. Darren Aronofsky knew what he was doing when he stamp Ryder as the washed-up prima ballerina opposite Natalie Portman’s ingenue in 2010’s Coloured Swan: a bit of meta-casting that played with audience’s awareness of her tabloid wink of an eyes and her (then) waning stardom.
